It is 1947, and Beit Daras, a rural Palestinian village, is home to the Baraka family - oldest daughter Nazmiyeh, brother Mamdouh, beautiful, dreamy Mariam and their widowed mother. When Israeli forces descend, sending the village up in flames, the family must take the long road to Gaza, in a walk that will test them to their limits. Sixty years later, in America, Mamdouh's granddaughter Nur falls in love with a doctor. Following him to his work in Gaza, she meets Alwan, who will help Nur discover the ties of kinship that transcend distance - and even death. Told with raw humanity, The Blue Between Sky and Water is a lyrical, devastatingly beautiful story of a family's relocation, separation, survival and love.

Once again, Susan Abulhawa has demonstrated her mastery of historic fiction as a literary art form. She consistently provides her characters with so much substance they become animated with lives of their own. Between Nazmiyeh and the Beekeeper lies a society and country that will grab your heart and soul. I found it impossible to put down as I began to visualize the story unfolding before me as though watching a film. In "The Blue Between Sky and Water", Abulhawa blurs the line between history and allegory (with a dose of the ethereal and supernatural). A must read for anyone who appreciates (or wants to know) the beauty and culture of all that was and is Palestine, or; for those who are merely seeking to be entertained. Either way, you will not be disappointed.

The Blue Between Sky and Water Susan Abulhawa 9781408865125 Books Reviews

A wonderful story with complex characters, amazing events (thoroughly researched) and emotional, passionate lives. Very disturbing in parts yet it never loses its way. Gaza, as a place of Palestinians lives, desperation is mostly a life of turmoil and frequent violence from a powerful, despised enemy. A must read saga.
This novel is beautifully written. It is imbued with magical realism to tell of the absurd reality of life in Gaza under Israeli oppression, injustice, and occupation. The lives of characters flow seamlessly into one another, creating a bond between them that exists beyond geography, beyond time, beyond death, in a place of dreams, hope, communication, and community. The characters are so well developed, individually unique, and alive that you too feel like you are part of their community, their family. You feel with them and miss them when you put the book down, and so you avoid doing so. I read this book in two days it was so good. One of those you cannot put down, driving home one of the novel's many messages-- that there is power in storytelling.
Upon finishing this novel, I had two words, one thought, for the author "Thank you!"
Thank you for a great read, for showing us how extraordinary the lives of ordinary Palestinians are, for the love you so clearly have for this wonderful family, and for the history lesson you offer, as we learn of the joys and hardships of this extended family, from Gaza to the Gulf, to the USA, and back home, to our beloved Palestine.
My first book by Susan Abulhawa.I was totally mesmerised by this amazing tale of suffering, despair, joy and love of this Palestinian family's plight in the refugee camps of Gaza.Even though it''s a fictional story the background of the Israeli Palestinian conflict is entirely real.Susan Abulhawa's description of the sufferings of the women folk in general and how they the keep the family together is heart wrenching. It's truly eye opening to hear the Palestinian side of the story when all we hear most of the time is the western media view of the Israeli side. This book has made me appreciate the very recilient Palestinians for their dreams and hopes of a better life even in the midst of an unsure future.
Must read book! Could not put it down. The Blue Between Sky and Water, as in Abulhawa's Mornings in Jenin, paints the picture of Palestinian suffering under Israel occupation while demonstrating the incredible resilience and resistance of the Palestinian people. While this is not a book of poetry her lyrical story telling and character development demonstrates a fluidity that carries this title.
This is the second Susan Abulhawa book I read, and it was even better than the first. I couldn't put it down, and I didn't want it to be finished. While it was sad and harrowing in terms of the story of the Palestinian people, the way it was written was beautiful. She raises awareness of the tragedy that is the Palestinian history is a very ordinary non party political way, and everyone should read it. It really begs the question - why is this still happening in the 21st century.
A powerful beautifully written novel about a Palestinian family expelled from their ancestral village of Beit Daras. They become refugees living in Gaza. One of the reasons that makes this novel so special for me is the fact that it is told by a gifted, intelligent, brave, and talented Palestinian author/ writer. For me, it is extremely important that our narratives be told by us Palestinians and Susan continues to do so in an amazing truthful way. Her first OUTSTANDING novel, "Mornings in Jenin" will always have a special place in my heart! The "Blue Between Sky and Water" is also an extraordinary piece of work and I will be looking forward for her next novel. Susan Abulhawa is simply what I like to call a "PALESTINIAN FREEDOM WRITER." ~ Tanya
