Daniel Livingston is finally free. He's come clean about his passionless marriage and moved to St. Nacho's where he can spend time with his brother. Now he's ready to explore the endless sexual buffet being hot and rich and single has to offer.
The problem is a firefighter named Cameron Rooney who haunts his every waking thought and half his dreams. No doubt about it. Cam is going to require a level of honesty Dan has never before considered, and in order to achieve that, he will have to turn his life inside out. Coming clean to his ex-wife will cost him money, doing right by St. Nacho's will anger his business partner, and exploring a painful family secret will hurt the one person Dan has sworn to protect.
Cam's faith in Dan is tested and Dan's belief in himself is nearly non-existent. In the end, forging a new path could cost him everything or net him the most important score of his life in The Book Of Daniel.
The Book Of Daniel St Nacho Book 4 edition by ZA Maxfield Literature Fiction eBooks
Not the best effort by this author, but a decent read. Wealthy divorced guy has a romance with fireman who rescued him from car crash. Apparently opposites attract! Some of the things that didn't quite click for me: Hard for me, as the reader, to understand the allure St Nachos has for many of the characters in the book. They are very loyal and protective of their town, like it is a Utopia. The author doesn't really help me get there...just sprinkles the story with a handful of artsy, psychic, odd characters.
I also think they demonized Daniel too much. He had divorced, come out as gay, and been in a really bad car crash. I don't think much of what he did would earn the scorn of the entire cast of characters in the book. For example, his reaction to his brother's wedding announcement was blown way out of proportion, in my opinion.
Also, his whole disappearance for months, and relocation, was a bit over-the-top.

The Book Of Daniel St Nacho Book 4 edition by ZA Maxfield Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
When looking into buying any book, I always read a couple of the highest raters, then I go and look for the reviews that give the book a low rating, and here's why.
The thing that makes this a good book for some, might make it a bad book for others. The first 5 star rating I agreed with wholeheartedly. The book is engaging and I wanted to read more. The 2 star rating said it was awful how the main character came out and when sowing his oats and they found that distasteful. Truthfully some who are finally able to wear their colors proudly do just that, so there is truth in those pages.
The last book showed the love interest as a man who was loving, caring and funny, but also a player. I think it went a long way to showing that even though Daniel and Cam were vastly different, they were also the same. Cam was attracted to Daniel, but didn't do anything to win him over and, in fact, had not even stopped his playing even when Daniel was there and available. It isn't always easy to let someone in.
You should read the whole series (I have), but this one touched me the most. What Daniel had to go through to finally find his love and the journey they both needed to take was worth every minute of wanting to shake some sense into them both or cuddle next to the fire with them.
When a book makes you feel like that, you know it's good.
I almost gave this story 3 stars; then I realized that it was only because my expectations were really too, too high after the first three St. Nacho's books. If this had been my first Z.A. Maxfield or St. Nacho's book, I'd probably be looking towards drawing in a sixth little star, if that were only possible.
As always, Maxfield draws me in with well-written and very realistic characters; the good are flawed, and the bad - in this case the ex-wife - have redeeming qualities that save them from being caricatures. And the story is realistic, and humorous, and sad and overall wonderful, and mostly moves as exactly the right pace to draw me in and make me snarl at interruptions like the SO begging me to turn off the reading light because it's past midnight and we both have work the next day, except...
Well, except that what I would have considered two key points in the plot happen way too fast for me. It's hard to mention them without giving away pretty major spoilers, but one is alluded to by a previous reviewer, as well, and the other is towards the end. It may be that Maxfield felt she'd be loading on too much angst or something if she dwelled on either longer, but both left me wanting more. Sort of like if I'd opened a box of mini Oreos and found it only three quarters full.
Still, definitely a keeper and re-read on my !
Daniel is a man in the midst of some rather large life changes. He's going through a divorce, he recently came out as being gay, he's recovering from a car accident that crushed his arm, he's fighting St. Nacho's hold on him, tooth and nail, he's more than a little attracted to a hunky fireman (who is also a cowboy -- how hot is that!?!) and he's not really used to telling the truth.
Cam, on the other hand is pretty grounded. Honesty is very important to him. He wants Daniel, but he doesn't know if Daniel will every really be able to be honest with himself and those around him. And he has a cat that seems to think it's a dog. Poor cat.
This book, I think, illustrated the greatest personal journey of any of the St. Nacho's books. Daniel went from narcissistic consumerism to actually caring about others. Though the last couple chapters threw me for a bit of a loop, I think the book ended quite well.
I think I could be happy in a place like St. Nacho's.
My true rating of this installment is 2 for the romance/love story and 5 for the story of Dan's evolution and family, so really a 3.5. Since 3.5 isn't possible and since Maxfield is one of my favorite m/m authors, I rounded up. Dan's part of the story was very well done. His inner struggle and his growth as a person were moving and inspiring. His relationship with Jake is one of the best brother relationships I've read in this genre. Again, very powerful. In the face of Dan's excellently executed inner storyline, the romance just did not measure up. Cam did not get his due! Cam is supposed to be "larger than life" - and in the previous book he IS - but in this one, the one with him as a main character, he faded into the background. I actually found the scenes between Dan and Bree to be more powerful and authentic than those between the Dan and Cam. It was jarring that Dan and Cam had a semi-adversarial relationship in the beginning of the book and then wham! Dan is all the sudden pursuing Cam and Cam goes along with it. The romance played fifth fiddle to Dan's evolution, which in some ways is fine - Dan's story is powerful - but I really loved Cam from the previous book and wanted to see much more of him in this one.
Not the best effort by this author, but a decent read. Wealthy divorced guy has a romance with fireman who rescued him from car crash. Apparently opposites attract!
